FACES FROM PLACES

-WORK IN PROGRESS-

I began this series as a study of different skin tones, bone structures and an experiment with a contained and limited color palette. In a matter of 28 continuous days, I painted 14 paintings (9 shown here and 3 below) simply to see if I could. I learned more than I ever expected. I learned to really look at people that don't necessarily look like me and to appreciate their unique beauty. You really can accomplish amazing things when you go for it. I began painting in earnest a little over 1 year ago and i have been determined to hone this skill.

I plan to continue this series without an end in sight. My goal is to paint the faces of as many races and ethnicities as I can, so I realize that I have a long road ahead of me. This will truly be a labor of love. My genuine hope is to make people feel loved, included and wanted. If we can all realize that we’re nothing more than human beings, maybe we can be more forgiving, tolerant and understanding of each other. “Red, brown, yellow, black and white, we’re all precious...”

Steven Onoja

This painting started as a personal project. I first saw Stevens face in a photo taken by a fellow Stocksy photographer and I was so curious to find out who he was. After a little detective work, I found his instagram feed and was blown away with how stately he is. I reached out and asked if he was comfortable with me painting him and he obliged kindly, seeming warm and friendly. Once I got past painting the foliage, I was stuck for months on what palette to choose for his clothing, but patiently allowed it to come to me naturally until it felt right. I'm glad I waited. It's everything I wanted it to be.

NEW SERIES

I've started working on a new series, not yet titled, featuring women I admire, some famous, some unknown, some young, some old, but they all have something in common...

They are BAD ASS WOMEN.

LAURA LEE ➡️ The first completed painting in this series features Laura Lee, bass player of the Thai funk band, Khruangbin. Formerly a math teacher, she's now a self taught bass player touring the world playing some of the sexiest music ever made.
